Ectoin (tetrahydromethylpyrimidine carboxylic acid) is a derivative of an amino acid with the chemical name "tetrahydromethylpyrimidine carboxylic acid". It was first isolated in 1985 from a special bacterial halophilic bacterium in the saline-alkali desert of Egypt, Africa. As an effective ingredient derived from a highly halophilic bacterium, it is an important substance for halophilic bacteria to maintain osmotic pressure balance, so it is also called "halotolerant bacteria extract".

Ectoin is a cyclized amino acid derivative and an amphoteric, water bound organic molecule with good hydrophilicity (with a solubility of 5.45mol/kg in water). It can organize the binding of surrounding water molecules and amino acid derivatives, resulting in the so-called "Ectoin hydroelectric recombination". By protecting against ultraviolet radiation, Ectoin can inhibit the cellular aging process of keratinocytes and fibroblasts.
